Dr Gerard Lee was awarded his BS in Pharmacy in 1971 and his PhD in 1975, from the School of Pharmacy, University of London, UK. Additionally, he gained his membership of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in 1972, membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1983 and his fellowship of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain designated FRPS in 1994 for distinction in the practice of pharmacy.

Between 1992 and 1999, Dr Lee held the positions of Publications Editor (1992–1995) and Vice President (1996–1999) for the UK Guild of Hospital Pharmacists.

He has been the Secretary and Scientific Director of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission since 2002, and Group Manager of Laboratories and Pharmacopoeia since 2004. Previously, Dr Lee was Director of Quality Control, Liverpool Pharmacy, Practice Unit (1996–1999), and Group Manager of Laboratories and Licensing (1999–2004). Dr Lee has extensive experience in quality assurance and control in medicines.

Dr Lee was President of the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (1996–1999) and Vice Chairman of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission (2007–2010). Since 1999, Dr Lee worked with the Medicines Control Agency/Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and retired from MHRA in December 2011. Since 2008, he was Chairman of the European Pharmacopoeia Expert Group for Medical Gases, Chairman of the European Pharmacopoeia Working Party on Dialysis Fluids, and Chairman of the European Pharmacopoeia Working Party on Water for Pharmaceutical Use, and in January 2012, he was appointed as a member of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission.

Dr Lee has also been appointed as Honorary Lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire and Visiting Lecturer at the University of Leeds, all in the UK; and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the European Journal of Parental and Pharmaceutical Science.

In 1999, he was awarded the Medeva Gold Medal in recognition of his national and international contribution to hospital pharmacy.

In 2000, he received the US Vice President Al Gore’s Hammer Award.
